A World in London is the UK’s definitive, independent global music show, broadcasting weekly from London’s premier Arts station, Resonance 104.4fm, on Wednesdays at 6.30pm, and anytime worldwide on Mixcloud.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, DJ Ritu has been producing A World in London from home, and all shows can be heard at https://www.mixcloud.com/djritu/
‘A World In London’ was born when DJ Ritu joined BBC London in 2006, inheriting Charlie Gillett’s slot. The show is recognised as an essential meeting point for world music fans and a hub for the industry.
AWIL has an unrivalled reputation for presenting a rich cultural mix that truly reflects the diversity of London and its people. Guests include international stars such as Tarkan, Angelique Kidjo, Bebel Gilberto, AR Rahman, and Esma Redzepova, though the show aims to champion local, emerging, and marginalised talent.
A World in London now has a sparkling range of outstanding podcasts under its wing, available on Mixcloud, produced by the talented team that have worked on the original flagship show for the last five years. Check out artist Alban Low’s all-vinyl A - Z of Africa, crate-diggers delight Vinyl Joblottin’, and The Interlopers Guide. Then there’s musician Lucas Keen’s in-depth African music show, Rendezvous A Bobo. And new to the AWIL lexicon, is Musicians Noted, THE essential discussion programme with & for music-makers!
DJ Ritu’s broadcasting career began in 1991 at BBC 3 Counties Radio with her own weekly show on Thursdays, profiling various styles of South Asian music. She interviewed top stars from the British Asian scene like Apache Indian, Bally Sagoo, Rishi Rich, and UK Apache. The programme was syndicated in Germany, Sweden, and Turkey. Subsequently, Ritu also presented and produced programmes for Kiss FM, BBC World Service, BBC Asian Network, and BBC London, plus contributed to shows on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, and 4.
